Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) 2025-26
for polythene bags strictly regulate their manufacturing, thickness, and disposal. These rules help protect the environment and public health.
Here are the standard rules for polythene bags:
1. Thickness and Manufacturing Rules
- Minimum Thickness: Bags must be thicker than the legal limit. This is usually \(75\) and upto above microns. A micron is one-thousandth of a millimeter. Very thin bags rip easily and pollute the earth.
- Banned Bags: Black bags and very thin bags are banned. This is because harmful dyes and chemicals get into your food.
- Biodegradable Options: Factories are encouraged to make bags from safe, earth-friendly materials like jute or natural cornstarch.
2. Shop and Business Rules
- No Free Bags: Stores cannot give out free plastic bags. Customers must pay for them or bring their own cloth bags.
- Proper Food Packing: Hot or oily food must never be packed in thin plastic bags. Heat melts chemicals into the food.
- Penalties: Shops and factories that break these rules face heavy fines or closures.
3. Waste and Disposal Rules
- Empty and Clean: Used bags must be completely empty of trash.
- Safe Throwing Away: Bags should be put into closed dustbins. Never burn plastic, as burning releases toxic smoke that makes people sick.
- Recycling: Bags should be taken to recycling centers. Here, the bags are melted and reshaped into safe, new items.
